The Hated - 1985-1989 Discography

Let me first say, this was the find of a lifetime for me.

For the past 2 weeks i have been going through all the Hated files i've accumulated through the past 20 years. Stuff i had ripped from 20 year-old tapes and vinyl. Seems i had 2, sometimes 3 versions of the same tape or record, and i was on a quest to find the best possible quality track from each release to assemble a decent sounding collection for myself. Then, last night while roaming the web for art, i came across a mediafire link to the Desmond Outcast ep which sounded amazing. No vinyl rip here, this was the real thing, straight from the master tapes. That file led to other files and pretty soon i had enough mastered Hated material for 3 CDs. I can't take credit of course, all i did was assemble everything for my own convenience. Whoever put these files on the web is a hero. And at this point, i'm assuming Troubleman Unlimited dropped the project (wasen't this supposed to be released about 7 years ago?), so i see no harm in posting it here. This music should be heard the way it was intended to be heard. No more waiting. Enjoy!
The Hated Collection Vol. 1
The Hated Collection Vol. 2
The Hated Collection Vol. 3

Disk 1 has the entire 1986 demo (an amazing work of art), which was released in '92 as the What Was Behind LP, and mastered at the wrong speed. Here is the correct version, along with the band's first 7" No More We Cry from 1985, the Like The Days 2x7" from 1987, and the Desmond Outcast ep released in 1997, recorded in 1989.

Disk 2 has the entire Every Song LP. A classic, along with an assortment of unreleased songs recorded between '85-'89. Some outstanding numbers on this one. Flux, T.S. Elliot, Lighthouse... some of the most beautiful stuff they ever recorded.

Disk 3 contains the band's 1985 demo. A bit more on the punk side, and certainly less serious sounding. Good stuff though. Followed up with a bunch more unreleased stuff, aside from 2 tracks originally released on the Awl tape in 1992.

Every song is a revolution.

  1. Geez, I have a few random tracks by these guys and used to check the Troubleman site weekly to see if they had released the 2xCD yet. This collection you put together is amazing; thanks for sharing!

  2. You should add the 3 Shades of Dirty stuff too.. Let me know if you need it.

  3. I don't think Troubleman is ever going to release that.

  4. Thanks a lot for this! Only had their first 7" and have always loved it. Great stuff!

  5. The 3 Shades of Dirty (which i love), and most other related projects are all on the Jimmy Buttons blog. Thanks anyway.

And yeah, this will never be officially released.

  6. Thanks for The Hated and the other links.

I'm a huge Ida fan, and remain amazed at Dan's ability to feel the same affection and influence of, say, both Minor Threat and The Roches (since this mirrors my own tastes).

I've been catching up on the Ida precursors, so this is all very welcome.

  10. Collection 3 should be OK now.

I'm not sure what the problem was. Mediafire's been giving me a headache lately.

  12. hi, i'm happy to run across your recent blog entry on the mysterious Hated anthology. i too have multiple old cassette recordings of theirs which i've frustratingly tried to evaluate and organize over the years. i'm not too savvy or well off on the high tech front, so my feeble attempts to digitize have been unsuccessful.

it seems that the 3cd troubleman set is starting to seep into the cyberworld, despite it's lack of official release. i really don't know [or want to know] the personal or business related reasons behind the long delay [or perhaps even demise?] of the release, but i still would buy it if it ever came out.

i would echo the previous sentiment of the person who commented on "Dan's ability to feel the same affection and influence of both Minor Threat and The Roches" that's part of what makes these dusty old songs such a treat. and don't forget Erik Fisher's amazing contributions! i'm thrilled to finally have great sounding recordings of songs like Lighthouse and Plastic Boat, as well as to know their 'true' names. in my mind and on my very rough tape versions, i always thought of them as "Jesus' Daughter" and "Erik's Song" which is nice too.

i must confess that there are a few things missing from the collection that i know from my tapes. i was hoping they'd surface on the box set when i'd heard that the box set would contain "everything." but of course everything is certainly a relative concept and the line had to be drawn somewhere.
for example, i'm referring to acoustic versions of Never is Always, Psalm, Underground, Breakfast, What Was Behind, Fortunate One, Hey Mister and No Meaning. also other unreleased acoustic songs... maybe called Third Birthday, Salvador? - "a blessing for you", Where You Stand, and That? - "where's the path..." there's an acappella rendition of the hymn By the Waters of Babylon and a fantastic alternate version of These Are the Days with different lyrics.
i love this stuff and am re-inspired to try and transfer it into the 21st century. if anybody has any pointers for me? [i'm sadly PC, not Mac.]

so i've unfortunately and embarrassingly revealed myself as a ridiculous superfan, but i hope it's worth it for "the cause." any tips on cassette-to-MP3 would be appreciated. also any info on other old Hated/related stuff lingering out there in the world.

  13. Matt, thanks for the post. This collection is nowhere near definitive by any means. Besides the tracks you've mentioned, it's missing many tracks from the Awl cassette, including Police On My Clash and alternate versions of Every Song and Knocking On Your Door. I have various mp3s of these songs, but decided not to include them because the sound quality was severely lacking compared to the files on this collection. Like you, i would buy the official release if it ever came out. I hope everyone would.

Sorry, i don't have any tips on cassette to mp3 conversion, the component i use is pretty outdated now. I quick search online should hook you up with some easy to use software though.

    Cheers
    Vin

  20. this is amazing. i agree with a previous comment that the 3 shades of dirty stuff needs to be found and recirculated amongst the people.

  21. Yep...just wanted to mention that I had to subscribe to your feed. There's a wealth of great music on the blog. Totally stoked to have found you today.

  23. Take this post down? First log in properly so that i can click on your name and see that you are indeed Mike Troubleman. Then we can further discuss removing music that will never officially be released.

  24. Holy Crap! Just randomly cruising music blogs only to discover a band this awesome. Thanks so much!

  25. I was in a band on the Troubleman label when this was starting to be discussed. Funny how it still hasn't come out. If the music is not going to be properly released and available for purchase, why not post it online? Just a way to keep the music alive and accessible. Thanks for sharing it and doing the legwork. My friend had a copy of the LP, which I transferred to tape 15 years ago and of course is long gone. How else are you going to hear this music again?

  26. All this needs is their cover of "I Am A Rock" from the Wedge compilation on Simple Machines. I had it on my computer and lost it. Perhaps you can magically find it somewhere?

  27. Here's a rip of HATED's "What Was Behind" LP that comes straight from the master: http://www.mediafire.com/?yibdeh2mhmz
You might want to add that to the collection too! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Christian, the recordings from the What Was Behind LP is already in the collection. That LP was basically the entire 1986 demo mastered at the wrong speed. Thanks anyway.

    1. I agree with Stormy, the What Was Behind link on mediafire is the wrong speed. This version by Stormy here is the corrected speed. It even seems remixed because the bass is up throughout and Untold Mess is missing the back up vocals near ending. Even my record player could never make it sound this "correct". I LUV IT!

  29. wow, it's really amazing post. i'm going to download that, because having almost all The Hated songs i've just realized, that there are some unreleased tracks, of which i didn't know. thank you very much!

  30. I think Mike is more busy DJ-ing than putting out releases these days. ;) But at least he's doing a good job as a DJ.

Thank you so much Stormy for making these recordings available. The Hated are on of the few bands that never recorded a bad song. They've been truly remarkable. And I'm now most delighted to be able to listen to their songs again!

  31. You got really lucky with this finding, the sound quality is remarkable, and it does sounds like straight from the master tapes, whoever did this had to be in the band for sure.

  39. THANK YOU SO MUCH! I've been checking the Troubleman Unlimited site regularly since they announced their comp was in the works. I've moved 6 times since they announced that like a fucking decade ago. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Awesome.

  40. I was very happy to come across this archive today. Like Graeme right above me, I've checked Troubleman almost weekly for the past few years looking to see if the compilation has come out only to find that their headline for 1-1/2 years now has been that they're not shipping to Brooklyn anymore. Sigh... I know I'll buy any official Hated release if/when it comes out, so this is a nice digital backup of my cassettes and what little vinyl I have.

The main things I regret not seeing in this collection are the acoustic demos of some of their well-known songs, particularly the four Like the Days tracks (amazing amped or unplugged). Looking through tapes, I also found Heart Attack, Martyrs on a Reason, That, the live version of Untold Mess that always started every copy of What Was Behind I ever heard (with the birthday dedication to Tonie), the cover of I Am a Rock, and a bunch of other worthwhile demos. Ready for volume IV, even if it's not from the masters!

  41. Thank you for devoting time and energy to inform and share. I always enjoy hearing the raw beginnings of a genre.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Thanks for this! The Hated are truly a gem. I think 'Words Come Back' is way more 'Emotional Hardcore' than any of those other Revolution Summer bands. Pretty much a perfect example.

  43. Unreal, I search online for their stuff a few times a year and have never had any luck. I've only heard a few mp3's I got off Napster 10 years ago. Thanks so much.

    ReplyDelete
  44. This is the greatest collection of unreleased music i've ever found. I've been looking for a decent copy of the 1985 Demo for over then years. This is fucking insane.....thank you so much

    ReplyDelete
  45. is there anyway you'd put up a single file download of the alternate version of Every Song? I'm dying to hear it and well aware that the sound quality is probably far from decent I'd just love to have it in my collection thx for everything

  46. hi, i tried to find your email but no luck! any way these download links are dead, any chance you could upload again or on a different site? I would really really really love these files!

  47. It's just such a tragedy that I find this now after everything is taken down. What a bummer.

  48. Everything is available here, separated by actual release instead of pseudo-discography.

    http://discohijack.blogspot.com/2009/12/hated.html

I'm both delighted and saddened by the fact that there is still stuff I haven't heard by this band. I have everything that as far as I know that is available online, but still desperately desire those acoustic tracks people are mentioning.

  57. I can't believe this stuff has been sitting on the internet for over 9 years and i've only found it now. A buddy of mine in high school ordered a copy of the Awl cassette when it was released and played it for me one day in like 1992. Despite having looked for decades, i've never managed to find any Hated stuff except the "I am a rock" track from a Simple Machines Comp. You are a punk angel for posting this.
