The NY Hoods - 1986-1988 Discography
Yet more great '80s hardcore from Astoria, Queens. This is a collection of both the band's demos and radio sessions. Enjoy:
The NY Hoods Collection
All the files here were found online, and i cleaned them up as best as possible. I was able to remove the tape hiss from the "Neutral" demo without interfering with the sound. I fixed the problems with the "Built As One" demo, the major one being that the tracks were poorly separated. I also separated the WFMU set, which was all one mp3, and boosted the sound. The WNYU set i posted as is. It's missing the song Anger Builds unfortunately, as that track had major problems, but this collection is already an exercise in redundancy, so i don't think it's an issue. Some of the tracks are a bit rough sounding, especially the "Built As One" demo, but i'd say these are the best rips you'll find anywhere.
The "Neutral" demo was recorded in 1986, and had the skull image on the cover which i've used here. Engineered by Mick Neal and John Steigerwald.
1986 lineup:
Bobby - vocals
Matty - guitar
Nicky X - bass
Kevin - drums
Gavin Van Vlack also played for Side By Side, Absolution and Burn.
The "Built As One" demo was recorded in 1988, and was released with at least 2 different covers.
1988 lineup:
Bobby - vocals
Rich - guitar
Jay - bass
Jason - drums
Seems the only constant member was the vocalist. Also, i'm pretty sure one of the NY Hoods members was in Breakdown at one point. If anyone has any further info, please leave a comment.

Thanks again. I have somehow managed to have ignored the NY Hoods over the years. I am looking forward to giving this a listen.
ReplyDeleteBobby was the only constant member. He was also in Gilligan's Revenge and Cold Front. Jaybird was also in Krakdown. There were various other people who were in the band over the years like Nicky X (Abombanation, Breakdown, lots of other bands) and Mike Sentkewitz (Raw Deal, Crawlpapy).
ReplyDeleteVINNIE! I thought this was you! Remembered trading zines and your little cdr "fanclub" releases 10 years ago! What tipped me off was the "inserts" you'd make for some of these uploads!
ReplyDeleteBrian, thanks for the info. I know there was also a NY Hoods Live at CBGB tape making the rounds back in the late '80s. Pat Duncan used to play tracks off of it and it sounded great. There was one on Ebay a while back. If anyone has a rip of this, please get in touch.
ReplyDeleteSean, good to hear from you. You're blog is overwhelming. I can't even count how many rips i've gotten from there. Damn, the old CDR releases. I can't believe how many bands and people complained about that somehow thinking i was making money, when i reality i wasn't even breaking even, I remember CDRs in the early '90s being close to 3 bucks each, and i was charging 5 bucks (shipping included) a CDR, with custom color printed covers. Funny shit. Hey, please link me to your blog when you get the chance.

Thanks a lot for posting this. I remember seeing the NY Hoods with Gorilla Biscuits in 86. One of my early favorites, NY Hoods and Krakdown were set to do a split full length at one point. I wonder if there are any of those tracks floating around.
ReplyDeleteJames, i have the Krakdown recordings from that unreleased split in the Krakdown collection i posted a while back. Great stuff. I don't think the NY Hoods side was ever recorded unfortunately, so i don't think you'll find any tracks floating around.

Rich who played guitar on the second demo also played in Token Entry for awhile. I think he's on the last couple records.
ReplyDeleteNicky X. here... Just wanted to give some accurate info regarding the posts up above. The original N.Y. Hoods lineup was Bobby-Vocals, Matty-Gits, Nicky X.-Bass, Kevin-Drums. That was from '83-'86. I've been getting some requests for a reunion show, but I don't know if the orig. lineup is all willing. I'll keep ya posted on that!!!
ReplyDeletePeace...X...
Oh, and Rayco, If ya read this shoot me an email beeyotch!!!!
I really admire this, I mean it really looks interesting!
ReplyDeleteNicky, thanks for the info, the post should be pretty accurate now. A reunion show would be great.
ReplyDeleteAlso, i've been looking for a live at CBGB set that Pat Duncan used to play on his show back in the late '80s. If you have that, please get in touch.
Vin
anyone have lyrics for the 2nd demo?
ReplyDeleteThis will make me busy all day, or maybe even longer. Thanks for the information.
ReplyDeletenicky x gave me his lamp and a shirt with dragons on it and some other crap one time like 8 years ago when he went to rehab. cromags, goodshit. Just googled nicky x to see if he was still alive. good to see that as of 10/09 he is. peace.
ReplyDeleteThe band here is pretty cool, I am really getting a hold of this 80 NYCH that honestly I missed back then. Still not a fan of repeated tracks, but at least we have a sense of evolution in them.
ReplyDeleteThis is great. thanks for sharing
