Life Sentence - 1985-1989

I'm pretty sure this is everything Life Sentence ever recorded. The self titled album is an absolute hardcore classic, and part of my high school soundtrack back in 1987. Damn i'm old.

Life Sentence Collection

From the Kill From the Heart site:
Life Sentence was a hardcore band from Chicago, Illinois. The band got its start in 1984, with the lineup of Joe Losurdo (bass), Eric Brockman (guitar), Tom O'Connor (drums), and Ray Morris (vocals, previously in Six Feet Under). Midway through recording their debut record, the rest of the band dumped their singer and continued as a three-piece. The record, a self-titled 12", was finished in 1987, and released on Chicago label Walkthrufyre. Later, the band split into two groups, both calling themselves "Life Sentence." The split was hardly friendly (see the lyrics to "Win, Lose, or Sue"), and one side actually sued the other. Brockman, the winner of the lawsuit, recruited Jeff Hauck on bass and Gustav Chumpske Roman on drums for the No Experience Necessary album, released in 1989. The band continued playing until the early 90s.

  1. They released a 7" after their 2nd LP. I used to have it, but sold it because it sucked. I didn't even rip it because it was so bad.

  2. "More Punks for Profit", that's what that 7" was called. I eBayed it and got only $2.50 for it.

  3. I always stayed clear of that 7". Guess i made the right choice.

  4. The first Life Sentence EP or LP, whichever you want to call it, is where it's at (tracks 1-10). The lineup changed after that and drugs plagued the band from what I remember. The music of course suffered after that.

  7. I met a guy in the band in a men's shelter in Chicago while volenteering. I beleive it was Eric Brockman because he said he played guitar and sang a little. You could tell he was messed up from drugs, but he was cool. He talked to me about music and said he was a hardcore punk. He told me to look up his band Life Sentance.

  9. Eric B. was a huge talent that wasted it all on dope. Sad--I knew his folks, and he broke their hearts.

  10. I grew up with Eric--considered him my best pal until he moved to Chicago. Met up with him in the early 80's again...sad to see him go this way. Not worth it, and his folks were good people.

  11. They recorded a demo prior to the 1st LP. I think it was supposed to be the 1st LP. It had Ray on vocals, and it was very, very good. They kicked him out of the band while on tour and re-recorded most of the songs for the LP and split the vocal duties between Eric and Joe. Ray's voice was perfect for the band. I've got the demo, but the quality has deteriorated over the years.

  15. I knew Eric Brockman very well. He lived in a shelter in Uptown(Chicago),in 2011. We were really close . He talked about Life Sentence with such pride and adoration! He told me about his past drug use and how unfortunately he was "getting over it" with alcohol. He tried AA meetings but they didn't work. He got out of the shelter and into his own place. But, unfortunately he lost his battle with alcoholism in March 2016. I loved him and he loved me. He will be greatly missed! A lot of people miss him especially in Uptown where he adopted the nickname "six pack"(I hated when people called him that). Everyone still talks about Eric and I hope it never ends. Eric B was bluntly honest, generous(though he didn't have much), loved his family and boy! was he a talker, lol . He would walk up to a stranger and start a good conversation. I love that about him. He was friendly and a good friend to all.
