Bad News

In short, firstpress thought i was taking up too much space on their server and dumped all my files. Even if i find another storage space i don't think i have it in me to re-link over a thousand links. So i guess i have to close up shop. If anyone needs anything they didn't get a chance to grab when everything was active, just hit me up and i'll throw it on mediafire or sendspace or something for you. I can do this for a month or so if it doesn't get too crazy.

The blog lived for 10 years, which i guess is better than most.

Thanks to Seth and to firstpress for letting me store tons of shit there for as long as they did.

Thanks for all the kind words and help all these years, to everyone who sent me music, left comments and helped in any way at all. I met a lot of great people doing this, and got to help get some great and rare music out there, some of which i thought would never have see the light of day otherwise.

I'll miss doing this, and i wish there was a way i could keep it going. I guess i'll keep the blog up as some kind of info archive, but the links will remain dead.

Take care everyone.

Vin

  1. you could always just keep posting new things, telling people that the links before june 2019 are broken. a lot of blogs do things like that. don't give up, i love your writeups.

    1. I agree completely. Your writing (and your passion for the music) is the best part of B&Q. It sounds like you don't really want to stop blogging. File hosts come and go. Don't let them keep you from keeping on!

    2. I can only emphasize that, do not stop, there would be something missing in Blogland

  2. This is truly sad. I've loved your blog for years and YES found tons of music I never thought I'd hear again. From one Jersey boy to another - Best of luck my friend and THANX for all the great tunes and comps!

  7. Dude, your blog is by far one of the best things that I've ever come across, and I've discovered so much amazing music because of it. I definitely agree with Eliot and hope that you keep on posting new updates, even if the old links remain inactive. Thanks for all the great tunes Stormy.

  8. Thanks guys i really appreciate all the support.

Seems i lost quite a bit of music in the dump. I'm working on trying to get it back, and may even ask for help on here. If i get everything back and can find another server that i understand, i'll go through the ridiculous task of re-linking the board. We'll see how it plays out. No promises.

As far as continuing with posts while trailing 10 years of dead links... well, that's not what i envisioned for this blog. I wanted this to be a kind of archive.

  13. Please don't give up on this music blog. I hope you'll be able to find a way to continue doing it. So much great music and information here. I have learned a lot from site. It was bad timing that I accidentally deleted stuff I downloaded recently from "80's Hardcore Grab Bag" post. I hope you can maybe at least re-do download links to that post. Anyway, thank you for all the great music & info and all the time & care that you put into this blog. I hope somehow it will all workout for you to continue it. Good luck with everything.

  14. First, i can't thank you enough for all the music you've shared. Second, start another blog!! Leave the old links dead, close up B&Q, and begin something new. Unless of course you're sick of the whole thing, but it doesn't really sound that way...

  15. While I only discovered this blog a few years back, 10 years is one hell of a good run considering most blogs of this sort that were started just a year or two prior have been long dead.
I've always been a huge advocate for file sharing so it's sad to see any blog be halted for any reason (thankfully yours wasn't victim of federal intervention as I've seen others), but if I could say any blog went out gracefully, it'd be this one.

That said, I have a proposal: start a new blog. Post new things on this new blog, things that haven't be uploaded here. Maybe pick out a handful of things from this blog to re-up on the new one, and spread them out over time: re-upping everything would be a sure path to madness. Also, instead of posting a batch of 30+ albums per post, try doing maybe five at the most. You're the only blog in recent memory that I've seen who posts big batches like this, and from our end it's kind of a nightmare to dig through it all. If you're doing posts based around a genre or concept (like you've done here with 80's hardcore, gorenoise, etc.) then part them out (like "gorenoise part1," "part2," etc.). Keep flavor text to a few sentences at most.
Maybe this is how you want to do it, how your writing style is, and if so then I can accept that. But if I were in your shoes and still wanted to do this without re-upping a thousand links, I'd definitely refine and minimize my old approach.

  26. Thanks for all your time & effort to keep this going for so long. You've turned thousands (at least a couple hundred) onto so much cool shit over the years & I for one have learned so many useless music facts I may never recover. Seems kinda fucked for a server to do this with no warning..Take care & thx again.

  27. You were one of the best out there, good blogs are dying pretty fast. End of an era I guess, Im on my 9th year with my own blog and next year will probably be the last one.

  28. Long-time follower here. This is a huge bummer, you had an incredible collection.

It's possible to edit links automatically using the Blogger API (https://developers.google.com/blogger/docs/3.0/using#WorkingWithPosts). I'm an experienced Python programmer and I would be 100% interested in helping you rewrite all those links automatically.

As for finding a new home for all that data, maybe an "alternative" file storage system like IPFS could help. That way even if you personally can't host anymore, other people could step in to help.

Also I'm sure there are a few people out there (myeslf included) who would be willing to help pay for a "dumb" data storage method like Backblaze B2.

Let me know if you're interested in any of this nerd stuff... I'd hate to lose such a great resource.

    1. Also how big is all that data? Can't be over 1 TB can it?

  29. Hey Ourobourbon, thanks for the offer. I was going to look for a storage space pretty soon as i almost have all my files back. Not sure what a TB is, but let's just say it's a fuckload of files. Please email me when you get a chance about the auto-linking.

Please do take Ourobourbon's offer. I think this person has the right ideas help you get this blog back up and running again. I am glad to hear that you almost have all your music files back. Gives me hope that things will eventually be back to normal here. Thanks for not giving up on this great music blog. Good luck with everything. I'll patiently wait for a "good news" post.

  31. Vin,

Came here to re-download the Jerry's Kids post and saw this.
This is just about the saddest news I've seen for a long time. This is definitely the best blog out there. I hope you can get some assistance from some of your tech savvy followers and keep this thing going.

Best of luck, and thank you for your service!

  34. Big ups for keeping this up for as long as you've done. I ran Broken Records, Broken Teeth for 3 years about 10 years ago then I gave up. Life happened and my MF account was banned and "my" content removed. Sad to see another one go. A classic. I wish you all the best, brother.
